Well, what a week it has been. And much to my chagrin, I have not found out that our election and the entire past year leading up to it was just like the CBS hit television show Dallas’s Dream Season”, in which the entirety of the ninth season (1985-1986) was revealed to have been a dream. Oh well. So, I am forced to deal with the facts, think positively and carry on. NOW, I am going to go out on a limb and make a comparison, please don’t hate me for it.

Let’s suppose you are given really bad news about your health. There are two choices: one choice is that you totally give up, start eating like crap, lay on the couch all day and just feel really bad about yourself. The other choice is that you make the best of the situation, try to eat better, be more active and keep an open mind. I will always go with the latter choice, since you really never know for sure what could happen next. OK, I know….a bit of a limb 🙂

Product Pick of the Week: Hemp Seeds

Every once in a while I stumble upon a food and I ask myself: “How come it took you so long to discover it?”. Well, my recent discovery is hemp seeds! They are great source of protein and are rich in healthy fats. An excellent choice especially for a vegan who is trying to add more protein to a dish. I found out about them when I was creating a vegan smoothie recipe for Life & Style Magazine.

They have a rather mild taste, somewhat between a sunflower seed and pine nut; however, I really don’t recommend eating them on their own. I like them ground into a smoothie, tossed into a salad or as a topping to oatmeal, yogurt or cottage cheese. (Same as I use ground flax or chia seeds.)

Nutrition stats per TBSP:
57 calories
4.3 grams total fat
.5 grams saturated fat
1 gram fiber
3.3 grams protein

I would caution though with sprinkling on TOO much, since at 57 calories per tablespoon the calories could add up rather quickly.

The Healthiest Election Day Food and Drink Ideas

I originally wrote this piece on my US News blog to help ease the stress on Election Day. But unfortunately I think a lot of that stress still remains. And who am I kidding – foods that could possibly help with stress are good to know ALL year round.

P.S.  Also recommend watching late night comedy, including Saturday Night Live, to provide a little comic relief. A good laughs always helps! Just please limit the late night snacking!!!

Reinvent Your Oatmeal

Now I don’t usually consider myself boring – but when it comes to my breakfast behavior one might call me that. I am the person who practically eats the same breakfast 365 days a year – hey, why mess with perfection? Anyhow, thankfully I have many friends/colleagues who are more adventurous in the kitchen then I. Check out this article in US News for my “usual” and for many other great ideas!!!!!
