“The more things change, the more they stay the same!” Not sure where I first heard this quote, or if it actually just came from me. Ha!!! In any event, this past week had me thinking of it. Just when you think we are starting to move on in the diet culture, eating more mindfully, etc., I get interviewed more than once this week for articles about avoiding carbs! GASP! Obviously, there are many people out there who haven’t gotten the memo. Carbs are not your enemy; it’s all about what you choose and how much you eat. I can only hope that eventually the no-carb mentality will begin to change for good!

Keri’s Kitchen: Bagels and Lox

While we are on the topic of carbs let me tell you about my typical Saturday and Sunday lunch – bagels and lox. When I tell patients they too can enjoy this meal they look at me in wonder! Here’s what I recommend:

1. Whole wheat bagel – scooped (who really needs the inside of the bagel and honestly without this dough it makes more room for the really good stuff!)
2. Tofu scallion cream cheese lightly spread on both sides (or light cream cheese – but trust me, tofu cream cheese tastes really good!)
3. One-quarter of an avocado – spread evenly on both sides on top of the cream cheese.
4. One slice of lox (torn or cut into smaller pieces) on each half.
5. Top with ground pepper, slices of red onion and tomato.

Enjoy!!!!

Why You Should Think Twice About Low-Carb Diets

In keeping with what seems to be the theme for this week’s Keri Report I thought I would re-share this article with you that I wrote for Fitness Magazine. Science should play a crucial role in helping us to determine what is healthy or not. However, we also have to know how to interpret the results. At the end of the day it isn’t always so crystal clear. Bottom line is that too many people put all carbs into one category and that they lose sight of what they should actually be eating.

7 Reasons You Need To Eat Carbs

OK, I promise just one more thing about carbs! (Ha! At least in this week’s report!) Many people don’t even know why you need to eat carbs; they think they can have a totally healthy diet without them.  But guess what, our bodies most definitely need them to run efficiently. I pulled this article out of the archives simply to drive my point home. Happy reading!
