“Comparison is the thief of joy.” Ran across this quote the other day, not that it was the first time I heard it, but it really made me stop and think. Wow – SO TRUE. In yoga we are always told to keep our eyes on our own mat. Comparing what your body can do and what someone’s else can is really not productive. I’ve also had many patients over the years who felt uncomfortable going to a gym; it intimidated them because of the “buff” bodies that would surround them. The truth is we all come in different shapes and sizes, some more flexible, some stronger, but what really matters  at the end of the day is that you show up for yourself —to get stronger, more flexible or whatever else it is that drives you to exercise. I could go on and on about comparison, since no thanks to social media we are bombarded on a daily basis with images that all look so picture perfect. So please – stop comparing and start enjoying!

Keri’s Kitchen: 5 Different Uses for Mustard

I think mustard is a condiment that you either love or hate. Personally, I love it. It adds a lot of flavor with so little calories. But, like many condiments, it gets type cast. “Oh I only use mustard on hot dogs!” ….”Eat it only with a ham and cheese sandwich!” But the beauty of mustard is: 1. there are SO many different types and 2. it can be used for so much more than a simple hot dog or sandwich. Typically I buy a Dijon variety; however, my latest purchase was a “stone ground, full strength” which was FULL of flavor.

How I use it:

  • Mixed with 100% full fat mayo for both tuna and egg salad. The strong flavor allows me to use less mayo.
  • On top of a baked potato with a dollop of sour cream and a pat of butter. Once again the intense flavor makes it easier for me to use less of the “fattening” stuff.
  • I marinate chicken with a little lemon, olive oil and mustard.
  • The little amount of times I make homemade salad dressing – I add mustard.
  • I do, just like everyone else, put in on a ham/Swiss sandwich or hot dog for hubby!

9 Creative Gifts for the Healthy Junkie on Your List

Every year it seems I now compile a list of holiday gifts from my RD pals for my US News blog. Hopefully you will find it helpful. My own personal gift suggestion was omitted by my lovely editor – she thought it wasn’t “health-focused” enough! SO – I am sharing it here in the hopes that Santa subscribes to The Keri Report.

Dear Santa:

I would like a pair of wire-less ear buds. Being a New Yorker who walks everywhere, I love to listen to music while walking. I am not sure what the best brand is so I leave that to your discretion.  Thank YOU!

Why You Shouldn’t Listen to Mariah Carey When it Comes to Dieting

OK – here’s the thing!  I love singing, but really can’t carry a tune. On the other hand Mariah Carey knows how to sing and sing really well. But does she know how to diet? I guess it depends who you ask. In my opinion, eating only 2 foods a day is NOT a diet – it is craziness!!!! Once again this is a reminder of who’s advice we should follow. Me, and other nutrition experts, for diet advice …thank you very much! And most celebrities? Still not sure. Thanks Shape Magazine for letting me voice my concerns.
