August is one of the most popular times of the year for Americans to take a vacation. Either by car or plane, they’re off for a little rest and relaxation. Some travel with family, some with friends and others alone. And if any of them are like many of my patients, they may be concerned that it will be difficult to eat healthy while traveling.
Below are some basic tips that will help you eat healthy while away from home:
Traveling by car:
- First and foremost, you must be prepared. Do not leave to happenstance where you will stop along the way. As we all know, gas stations don’t always sell the healthiest items.
- Buy a cooler and fill it with: low-fat yogurt, individual serving size of cheese, fruit, raw veggies, and hummus.
- Pack some non-perishable snacks such as nuts (pre-portioned in snack size bags), “granola” type bars (the lower the sugar the better), popcorn, and baked whole grain pita chips (also in snack size bags).
- Bring plenty of water.
