And, lastly what’s the deal with Ghee for weight loss? Could it possibly be that another celebrity is a little crazy on the diet front?

You Ask, We Answer: The Scoop on Peanuts

There is always so much confusion in the nutrition world that I really love when I can clear up a piece of it. So here is one for today:

Myth: “Nuts are VERY high in sodium and should be avoided.”
True or False: False

Here’s the real deal and I am going to use Planters Peanuts, a brand I have partnered with, as my example. According to the latest USDA Dietary Guidelines, it is recommended that the average adult not exceed 2400mg of sodium per day. One ounce of Planters Cocktail and Salted Peanuts have 95mg of sodium per 28 grams (a one ounce serving) and Planters Dry Roasted Peanuts have 150mg. For comparison a half cup serving of 2% cottage cheese has 459 mg of sodium. More than twice as much – ouch. So, you can see in the scheme of things the sodium in the peanuts is not high at all.

And there is more good news: peanuts contain heart healthy “good” fats – with more than 80% coming from monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, which science has shown may lower cholesterol levels. Also, one serving provides 7 grams of protein, a great amount, in my opinion, for a snack food.

I however must provide one warning: portion control! If you’re like my husband you LOVE to eat them from the jar and since they taste so good, you’ll eat too many. So please measure out your portion to keep the calories in check. You can thank me later.

There’s a New Protein Powder On the Block

Of course you know that protein is an important nutrient, but how in the world do you go about choosing a protein powder? And, do you even NEED a protein powder, for that matter? If there weren’t enough options already, now there’s a new type of protein powder out there — egg white protein. Don’t miss my article on fitnessmagazine.com for the skinny on this latest protein powder, plus other popular types, so you can decide for yourself!

Is Ghee the New Lemon Water?

In the world of weight loss fads there is little that surprises me these days. SO, is Ghee (a type of clarified butter), all the rage lately for any good reason? Whether you’ve tried it already, or never even heard of Ghee, don’t miss my interview with womenshealthmag.com for just the facts on this one!
