Guess what today, September 13th, is? Give up? Ok – it’s National Peanut Day! It seems to me there is a National _______ Day for just about everything. I do wonder who started this or how a food gets its own day in the calendar; but I’ll leave that detective work for another day.
Here’s the thing – I don’t know about you, but I’m already eating peanuts regularly throughout the year! And truthfully, it’s not only because I have partnered with Planters peanuts; but it is because I am a genuine peanut lover.
But for those of you who aren’t aware of why you should love peanuts year round let me tell you:
- Peanuts are a perfect better-for-you snack. Did you know that every single 1 oz. serving of dry roasted peanuts delivers 7 grams of protein and 6 essential nutrients? Impressive!
- Peanuts are plant–based friendly! The newly released 2016 Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA) emphasizes choosing nuts and legumes (like peanuts!) is part of a healthy diet.
- Peanuts, despite popular belief, are not high in sodium. Dry roasted peanuts have 150 mg which is below the FDA sodium limit.
Now on the other hand there are many “food holidays” that I would not celebrate and frankly, have a problem with. For example, did you know that June 5th was National Donut Day or that National Fried Chicken day was July 6th? I did because who could miss it on social media. But guess what, I didn’t care. I don’t eat donuts or fried chicken on any day of the year and if I did, I wouldn’t need a special day to give me the thumbs up to enjoy them.
Now I will get off my “rant” and coincidentally enjoy some Planters peanuts and NOT because it is National Peanut Day, but simply because I enjoy eating them and appreciate their health benefits all year round.

Don’t Make These 5 Food Journaling Mistakes
Ever since I have had a private practice I have asked my patients to food journal. Over the years I have definitely found it to be a very helpful tool in the weight loss process. BUT honestly, I had never done it myself! After ONE week, yes only ONE week, I was ready to throw in the towel. Read my latest US News blog to find out why I have a whole new perspective on food journaling.
How many Eggs Is it Really Safe to Eat Per Week?
I LOVE eggs — I eat them for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I eat them all the time and never get bored. BUT – should there be a limit to how many I eat? Thanks to my interview with Women’s Health we get to the bottom of this.
P.S. Never been called a “egg-spert” before….so clever :)))
