It’s can be a crazy world out there, especially with lots of different opinions on nutrition, and no thanks to the internet, it’s easy to access. Talking nutrition sometimes can get as heated as talking politics. Honestly, I try my best to offer my opinion only when asked (OK, maybe more than that) and stay clear of confrontation (Hmmm? OK, who am I kidding?). In any event – this week I had so much fun writing my blog for US News on things people say on nutrition that drive me crazy.

Product Pick of the Week: BioK Plus, Strawberry

Probiotics, aka “good bacteria”, seem to be all the rage. They are associated with gut health, preventing harmful bacteria from growing and boosting the immune system. While probiotics are naturally found in yogurt, kefir, miso, kimchi, tempeh; some opt for a more potent dose of probiotics from a supplement.

This BioK Plus in strawberry is a drinkable probiotic, which contains a patented blend of bacteria, including various types of Lactobacillus, a type of “friendly bacteria” that some research has shown can help us break down food and fight organisms that may cause GI issues. The strawberry flavor adds a bit of sweetness to the somewhat acidic taste of probiotic drinks. I also like that it’s made using minimal processing, and with only 60 calories and 7 g of sugar you’re getting “healthy” bacteria without a lot of added sugar.

P.S. Probiotics might be useful for most individuals; however, first and foremost a well-balanced diet with plenty of fiber should be your priority.
