One down, two more to go! With Thanksgiving under our belts it now just leaves Xmas and New Years. Oh yes, and Hanukkah! All I know though is that this week so many of my patients will be questioning their most recent eating decisions. Too much stuffing? Perhaps. One too many slices of pie? Probably. But at this exact moment – who cares? If I have said it once, I will say it probably a million more times: “Today is a NEW day!”. We can’t spend precious moments of our time belaboring over what we can no longer change. But what we can do is make better decisions NOW.

P.S. My holiday sharing stories are anything but over. SO please be prepared to replace the word “Thanksgiving” with any other holiday or festive occasion you see fit.

You Asked and I’ve Got Evidence-Based Answers: Sucralose

I know Thanksgiving just passed and everyone might be still in a turkey and stuffing coma – but let me give you some information that’s going to wake you right up. How many of you are familiar with ALL of the evidence supporting the safety of sucralose? Not many, I’m sure. But I have an update to tell you that is brand, spanking new.

Sucralose (the sweetening ingredient in SPLENDA® Sweeteners) helps people manage their intake of calories and added sugars. I’ve discussed before how I’ve been a fan and customer of the brand long before I started working with them. However, there are many misconceptions about this low calorie sweetener based on incomplete and inaccurate science. Check out my recent and very interesting (if I must say so myself) webinar with Today’s Dietitian about reading between the headlines and evaluating scientific evidence.

As a practitioner, I am trained to back up my opinions with scientific evidence, specifically the totality of high-quality evidence on a particular topic. Well, the evidence on sucralose could not be clearer or more comprehensive. Enter this recent paper published in Food and Chemical Toxicology. In over 30 pages of references, tables and analysis, a critical review of all the evidence to-date on sucralose has concluded…DRUM ROLL PLEASE…it’s SAFE. We’re talking studies looking at sucralose and the gut microbiome, diabetes, weight gain, cancer, growth, development, reproduction – you name it. There were over 130 references cited in the review, so as you can imagine, digging into this paper might take some time.

I would love for you all to read it from start to finish when you can, but in the meantime, the Science Team at SPLENDA® has just produced this wonderful pocket guide to help you navigate the findings. I’ll be using this guide with colleagues and patients alike as a professional reference for the foreseeable future! I suggest you do too!

10 Ways To Shave 1,200 Calories Off Your Thanksgiving DinnerMen’s Health

It’s never too late to learn something new. SO what if Thanksgiving has passed – trust me these tips are priceless. And of course you remember that the holiday season has basically just begun. Not so sure I agree with tip #10 – there just seems to be something wrong about drinking wine from a champagne glass. It’s almost on par with someone asking me to drink a martini in a plastic cup. Wrong on SO many levels!

9 How To Feel Less Bloated After A Huge Thanksgiving Meal Health Magazine

The funny thing about so many holidays stories is that you can really just remove the holiday (in this case Thanksgiving) all together and replace it with any occasion you want. For example, a wedding perhaps? The tips really are the same, just repackaged to look a little different to attract readers. Even though I probably get a little tired of being interviewed for some of these stories I will admit that they are very popular. Since this time of year is especially notorious for being filled with lots of festivities and overeating, I can’t help but share them with you.
