I can’t believe the holidays are upon us and do you know what that means?  It’s time for my holiday spiel! Here goes:

If you look at the word holiday – it includes “DAY”. Basically the holidays are 3 days: Thanksgiving, Christmas (or Hanukkah – OK 7 days there!) and New Years. EAT whatever you want. Yes, you heard me right — EAT whatever you want, on those 3 days. Now if you celebrate Hanukkah you will have to choose ONE of the seven days – sorry, it’s only fair! Now here’s the thing, those 3 days in the scheme of things is not going to be a big deal in relationship to your weight (or overall health). BUT, if you make the next 6 weeks into an eating frenzy using the “holidays” as your excuse, that ‘s another story!

I opt for enjoying the DAY and then back to reality. My mashed potatoes on Thanksgiving will be cooked with butter, gasp! However, I will try and make a point of choosing healthier options the remainder of the weekend. It really is your choice from now until New Years!

Keri’s Kitchen: Roasted Brussels Sprouts

This recipe is back by popular demand. (Think I posted it around this time last year!) The dish has actually become the first one anyone in my family ever asked me to bring – thank you Arlene! Usually I just bring vodka. And since I am the ultimate brussels sprouts lover – I never complain. But, unfortunately NOT everyone in my family shares my love of this veggie. Since this year Thanksgiving dinner is at my house and I really like happy guests –  I will also be roasting cauliflower!

Ingredients:
About 2 plus cups of brussels, ends cut off, outer leaves removed. (If large in size than I cut them in half)
2 TBSP extra virgin olive oil
2 cloves of chopped garlic
1 TBSP balsamic vinegar
salt & pepper

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Place all ingredients into a bowl with tight lid (or a strong sealable plastic bag) – shake till oil covers all the brussels. Next pour brussels in an even layer onto roasting pan. Place in oven, shake pan every 5-7 minutes, until brussels are brown on the outside and easily pierced with fork. Time will vary depending on size of brussels – but should be @ 30 minutes. When done – place in bowl and toss gently with balsamic vinegar before serving. Enjoy!

27 Healthy Choices At Fast Food Restaurants

I know many people find themselves in a food situation during the holidays (and truthfully year round!). But during this time of year, the situation is most likely a result of: road trip, airport, or simple lack of planning ahead. If you happen to find yourself at a loss of what to eat don’t despair. Glamour Magazine and I have you covered. Healthy choices and Fast Food Restaurant are really not an oxymoron.
