Another holiday weekend gone by. I don’t know about you, but I already feel like before we know it, it is going to be Labor Day. Ouch! Anyhoo – really trying to stay in the present and enjoy the rest of the summer. With that in mind, it definitely means a lot more BBQs, yoga outdoors, and the endless possibility of water activities. Yes, surprisingly this past week, I ventured into the waters with my husband, sister, and brother-n-law on kayaks. Whoever thought I was a creature of habit was dead wrong! So, this week in The Keri Report I wanted to give you a little more help on navigating BBQs and a little love for two foods that might not be part of your normal routine.

In this report you will find:
* Produce Pick of the Week: Apricots
* The 7 Worst Choices at Every Fourth of July Barbecue
* What the Heck Is Algae Oil?

Produce Pick of the Week: Apricots

I don’t know about you, but I LOVE apricots. I also think that not enough people openly share that love. They tend to play second fiddle to peaches, plums and all the other summer fruits. Maybe it’s because their season is so short – basically mid June to mid July. You can practically sneeze and miss it. The key is to buy them not too ripe because they will bruise easily, but also not unripe because they will lack in flavor. They should be oh so slightly soft to the touch. I love to have one as dessert with lunch, but you could use them in anything you would with fruit this time of year; cut up in yogurt, cottage cheese, oatmeal, or on the grill. Don’t miss out!

Nutrition facts that I care about:
ONE apricot 17 calories
ONE cup of apricots @70 calories
Good source of vitamin A, potassium and fiber

The 7 Worst Choices at Every Fourth of July Barbecue

You guessed it, that’s my martini featured in the picture above next to my grill. Personally, I feel there is a place for ALL (almost all) foods and beverages. Truth is, I hate demonizing foods. But, on the other hand, I do like to provide you with the ammunition you need if you want to make healthier choices. It can really feel sometimes like a catch 22. So, here’s an article I wrote for US News right before July 4th, and am sharing it with you after the fact. Knowing that there are many more BBQs to be had this summer season I thought your might find it helpful.

What the Heck Is Algae Oil?

A little over a year ago I was introduced to algae oil by a PR company in NYC. At first I was a little skeptical, but then that skepticism turned into excitement. I was thrilled to get asked to partner with them to help spread the word of its health benefits and usage to the media and my nutrition community. Even though presently we are not officially working together I still am spreading the love. And glad to see that EatThis.com is also!
